My Art Journey
As a little girl, I would often sit and watch my mom draw and paint and was so in awe at the things she could create. When I got into middle school, I started learning the basics about composition and design. As I grew and developed as a young artist, I was introduced to various art materials and techniques, but wasn’t able to decide on what medium I preferred until I experimented with oil painting when I was in high school. From that time, until I was 23, I did a lot of experimentation and researched different oil paints and additives until I eventually switched to acrylic paints in 1996.
As far as my personal "art heroes" go, I admire the works of Georgia O'Keeffe, Salvador Dali, Phil Epp, Jennifer Cavan, Vladimir Kush, Howard Post, Josh Gibson, Yayoi Kusama, Debbie Carroll, Barb Clark, Dee Sanchez, and Greg Newbold just to name a few.
My faith journey started around 7 years old when I attended church with my grandmother. I would spend the weekend at her house about once every 2 months. She would take me to church and talk to me about God. Those seeds that were planted eventually started to grow and I was baptized at the age of 24 in 1997 and my life changed forever in the most wonderful way. I have been so blessed to participate in many ministries and church groups since then that have helped me to learn and continue growing in my relationship with Christ Jesus.
Artist Statement
My goal as an artist is to invite viewers into each work for spiritual reflection and discernment. In my earlier works, I used desert imagery and symbolism to express different emotions and life challenges that I was going through. Those earlier works were very cathartic for me as I was dealing with the sickness and death of my parents, my mom in 2001 & my dad in 2005.
I'm so thankful for the time I had with my parents on earth. I have grown to see over the years that extreme heartache after losing somebody is the evidence of great love that existed/exists, which is a true blessing. As a Christian, I also see a much greater love that has existed before I ever inhaled a breath: the love of Jesus for me. A savior when I didn't know I needed saving. A healer when I didn't know I was sick. A friend when I didn't know I was lonely. He is so much more than I could ever hope to imagine, and a lifetime of learning could never begin to define His greatness. My highest goal is that I may know Him more, be changed by Him, and share all that I discover with others.
